Canadians will be able to avoid unsolicited and really anoying telemarketer calls by registering with the national do-not-call list in exactly five days. The Canadian federal telecommunications regulator confirmed it will be ready for the Sept 30th. Just don’t expect for all calls to stop right away since the companys will have 31 days to update their calling lists. You can register to be added to the list by phone or online starting Sept. 30.

The Canadian Radio television and Telecommunications Commission warned that telemarketers found in violation of the do not call list could face fines of up to $1,500 for individuals and up to $15,000 for corporations.

Exceptions to the list include calls from political parties, charities, polling companies and newspapers selling subscriptions. Why in hell they allowed the newspapers selling subscriptions is beyond me. If i want the paper i will call and subscribe. Organizations with which the consumer has an existing business relationship are also allowed to call you. Hopefully this will cut out the bastards that call saying you won a all included vacation.

This may just mean you might be able to sleep in saturday morning without some sweat shop call center pissing you off. I guess we will see what happens, one thing is for sure atleast we got something in place. This system comes 5 years after the american do not call list took off. I hope they have the webservers ready to take a heavy load. The US system at the peak of the day, the Web site was being visited 1,000 times every second. By noon time, the registry had received 250,000 thousand names and by mid afternoon the number had climbed to 650,000, according to the Federal Trade Commission, which operates the reigistry.

Do you think the do not call list will help? Leave a Comment!

Recently, I posted an article on the status of the Canada Revenue Agency’s request for customer information regarding Canadian PowerSellers during the years 2004 and 2005 The Federal Court of Canada ordered ebay to hand over the data they have for 2004/2005. As you know ebay wants to protect its members’ privacy, eBay is continuing to contest the requirements for 2004 and 2005. Of course, it goes without saying that all Canadians should abide by Canadian tax laws and all other relevant regulations. eBay Canada is currently appealing the court ruling that would force eBay Canada to release the information of all Canadian Ebay Powersellers.

Despite that appeal being still underway, eBay was ordered by the Federal Court of Canada to release the information immediately. eBay strenuously objected to this order, and announced that they would launch a second appeal and this time it would be going to the Supreme Court of Canada. To avoid being forced to release our members the information before the first appeal has been decided.

eBay was pleased to report that they have since reached an understanding with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) such that they no longer need to turn over the PowerSeller records for the years 2004 and 2005 until the original appeal has been heard. As a result, the planned appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada is no longer necessary.

Move over Canada 411 and other local 411 services. Goog-411 is on the road making new trails. Don’t know where to find the closest pizza place in your city? Do you have no access to a computer or a phone book? Well google 411 can help, Canada is the only other country other then the usa to get the goog411 service. So how do you access it. Well its not like calling 411 on your local mobile phone or land line. You have to call 1-800-GOOG-411 and answer a few questions and then wait for your answer.

It will ask for the your city and province, then ask you what you are searching for. Then you would answer stuff like sports bar, pizza, fish and chips etc. You can then choose if you want to hear the number or be connected directly to the business or receive a text message with the details of the restaurant. There is also a option to have the google map sent to your phone. This will work really nice for GPS phones like the nokia N95, and other phones with google map apps. Blackberry, iphone and whatever else has a decent web browser.

So what are you waiting for, Give it a try! I’m guessing to be listed in this database you may have to get your business listed in google local so make sure you are. If not you may be leaving business on the table. I could see in the future google selling ad spots in this service. For example if someone is paying for the leads their pizza place would get listed first.

If you are a ebay powerseller and not claiming your ebay income you may be in for a really rough tax season. The Canada Revenue Agency has won a Federal Court order requiring eBay Canada Ltd to turn over its names address’s phone numbers and email address’s of its ebay power sellers and high volume sellers. The CRA wants to find out whether those individuals or companies are reporting the income they made from online sales on their taxes. In a September 18, 2007 the ruling from Justice Roger Hughes of the Federal Court of Canada affirmed that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has the right to examine records on Canadians who generate monthly sales of more than US$1,000 through the online marketplace on eBay US or eBay Canada, also known as “PowerSellers”.

If your just selling some of your old junk online then you should have nothing to worry about. But if your more or less a business and doing over 1,000 dollars in sales a month and not claiming it you might be getting a call from the CRA. The key issue in this case was whether Section 231.2 of the Income Tax Act permits an order requiring a Canadian resident to provide information to which it has access in Canada, but that is stored in data facilities owned by another party outside of Canada.

So Canadians who sell a lot of stuff on eBay best beware the taxman is watching. It should be noted that this case is continuing and the issue of whether the CRA has provided sufficient evidence to demonstrate it is carrying out a “genuine and serious” inquiry is still to be addressed.

This case may require businesses to provide customer information to CRA in certain instances, it could have important implications for businesses and their customers. Information concerning clients in canada that can be accessed and used by an online commercial enterprise in Canada appears to be fair game regardless of where the information is stored or who asserts ownership over it.

If you thought this is only for the USA, Then your right. Hopefully in canada paypal will give us a shot at this. Since we now can no longer get a mastercard debit card hooked to your paypal account. Currently in canada you will get this error “We’re sorry but the PayPal Plug-In is currently only available in the United States and is not offered in any other country at this time” I just hope they don’t shaft us like they did with the paypal debit card.

Throwaway online credit cards are becoming the norm. Those of you that were jealous of the Visa throwaway credit card that creates a new unique one time use number for your online transactions can stop worrying, anyone can now get on the fun! Paypal will offer this service FREE to all users once it leaves beta, meaning you’ll have alot less headache worrying about credit card theft and security. Now for those interested in what you can do with the virtual cards. A ”virtual credit card number” through paypal would work on a site that you specify and then take from your paypal balance. Much like the paypal debit card did. The only thing is the new paypal cards are virtual you will be issued a new card for every purchase.

If your wondering how to get to that option here is the VCC URL. Like we said right now it does not work for Canada but in the future hopefully it will. Its more or less for say buying a domain with your paypal cash from a site that does not accept paypal. So you go into the little creditcard form get your new paypal virtual credit card and away you go. The Store gets its sale, processes the card just like any other normal visa / mastercard and you get your domain.
